Karen Woo Fund

The Karen Woo Fund is a tribute to the remarkable life and work of Dr Karen Woo, a British medical doctor and humanitarian who dedicated herself to improving healthcare for underserved communities in Afghanistan. Driven by compassion and an unwavering commitment to helping those in need, Karen worked tirelessly to provide medical care in some of the most remote and impoverished regions of the country.

In August 2010, Karen tragically lost her life during a medical aid mission in Nuristan, Afghanistan. She and her team had spent eight days trekking through challenging terrain to deliver critical healthcare services, treating over 1,500 individuals suffering from a range of medical issues, including ophthalmic and dental conditions. Her selflessness and dedication left an indelible mark on the communities she served and inspired countless others to continue her mission.

Karen’s vision extended beyond immediate medical care. Over the final years of her life, she worked to highlight the urgent need for healthcare in remote areas through initiatives such as filmmaking, raising awareness about Afghanistan’s humanitarian challenges. She also founded a small charity focused on health and education programmes, particularly addressing neonatal, paediatric, and maternal health.

The Karen Woo Fund carries forward her legacy by supporting the professional development of Afghan healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and allied professionals. The fund provides opportunities for advanced training and skill enhancement, ensuring sustainable improvements in Afghanistan’s healthcare system. By empowering local medical professionals, the fund not only honours Karen’s memory but also continues her mission to bring hope and healing to those most in need.
